Spent three days at the ASEAN summit meetings in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We made progress on the ASEAN Community (to be done by 2015), and on ASEAN Connectivity projects. These ASEAN programmes are important to us. Member countries are individually quite small in the global scheme of things. Hence we need to work together, despite our different situations and perspectives, to thrive in an uncertain world.
One key event was the launch of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). The RCEP will be a free trade area that links up all 10 ASEAN members and 6 ASEAN dialogue partners. This will cover nearly half the world's population and a third of the world's GDP.
We appreciate US President Obama’s strong support, visiting ASEAN on his first trip after re-election. For Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, this has been their last ASEAN meeting. We thank them for their support and wish them all the best. – LHL
